Identity
Amidst the social outcry during the BLM movement in August 2020, Black Creators London (BLC) was established. BLC was inspired by Indiana Lawrence's UK Database, which aimed to simplify the search for black creatives in London's creative industry. The creation of BLC aimed to address the issue of misrepresentation of black creatives and to provide an easy-to-use tool for individuals and businesses to find black creators without resorting to tokenism, othering, or pandering. BLC is not just another online platform, but a tool that creates a safe, efficient, and user-friendly environment for anyone seeking black creatives in the industry. BLC advocates for the rights of all black lives in the diaspora and aims to expand beyond London to create a more inclusive creative industry. This will help to bring attention to the underrepresented black creatives and give them equal opportunities to showcase their talents.
Black Creators London (BLC*) has made a commitment to foster a culture of inclusivity and creativity within the black community. Unlike websites based on hate or bigotry, BLC* was created to address the lack of representation of black creatives in the industry. BLC* serves as a benchmark for a "no excuse" code for the creative industry, which aims to ensure true representation across the creative landscape. By bridging the gap between clients and creators, BLC* aims to promote the vibrant contributions of the black community to the creative world. Although BLC* plans to create a platform for all creators in the future, it currently focuses on providing a means of representation and support for black creatives. As the creative industry remains dominated by voices that do not represent the London diaspora, BLC* will continue to prioritize inclusivity for black creatives.
